What makes this program special?
Sociology students have an opportunity to interact directly with their professors in all of their classes. Our small class size gives students a one-on-one experience both inside and outside the classroom.

Are there any additional admission requirements?  
No additional requirements are necessary beyond being accepted to WCU.

What scholarship monies are available?
All students are considered for merit-based scholarships at the time of admission. Additional scholarships are available based on FAFSA information.

What will I be able to do with this degree when I graduate?
Sociology majors, with their broad social science background, have many career opportunities. These include positions in the private sector as consultants and in state and federal government, law enforcement, and social service and nonprofit agencies.

What are the professors like?
The Sociology professors are active in their field with many years of experience in teaching and research. Their interests range from the study of “pop culture” to child and adult abuse in Western North Carolina.

What are the students in the program doing?
Students often get opportunities to assist faculty in their research activities. Student internships have ranged from working at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to local hospitals and nonprofit agencies.

Will I be able to participate in internships, clubs and other extracurricular opportunities?
Students are able to work with the Sociology faculty in conducting research and attending scientific meetings. Opportunities exist for independent study and directed research. Each year, students may participate in the study abroad program. Students may participate in the Sociology Club and the WCU Chapter of the Sociology Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta.
